SVP and Head of Engineering (Nov 2014 onwards). Prior to that, engineering lead for all search- and data-related efforts, including the Explore recommendations, contextual/passive search, user location, venue database, and the superuser community.

  • Built the team and technology that powered Foursquare's search and recommendations. Grew the team from 4 to 20 engineers.
  • Personally coded a significant portion of the Foursquare Explore search ranking algorithm, infrastructure, and evaluation suite.
  • Primary technology liaison for strategic partnerships, including Microsoft's $15m strategic investment in 2014.

Senior Staff Engineer / Engineering Manager

Built structured data engineering group from 5 to 35 engineers. Architected and built Google's core representation for structured annotations on documents, still in use across Google across products including Web Search, Maps, Ads, and Product Search. Responsible for both long-term strategic planning as well as direct team leadership, development, and recruiting.

Key accomplishments:

  • Annotations Framework: Designed and implemented a system for annotating structured information on documents. Built team of 12+ engineers from scratch to develop and implement new extraction techniques and drive product integrations across Google. This system drove features like Places Mode, Rich Snippets, and Recipe Search on Web Search, as well as "Web Pages" and "Reviews" sections on Google Maps.
  • Structured Data and NLP Strategy: Responsible for Google's overarching strategy for structured data, information extraction, and document understanding. Engineering lead for M&A in the space of semantics and structured data. Co-sponsored acquisition of Metaweb Technologies (Freebase) in July 2010.
  • Question Answering and NLP: Helped build Google Search's first system for directly answering questions on the search results page. Led the development of a world-class query and document understanding framework that has answered more than a billion questions on google.com.
  • Google Squared: Lead engineer and manager for team of 10 engineers building a next-generation structured search product.
  • Google Goggles: Helped build and lead the New York Google Goggles team from a single engineer to 9 in New York.
